Obiettivi di apprendimento attesi

  • To acquire a clear picture of your current level of preparedness to operate effectively (personally and professionally) in an intercultural context (mobility) in terms of Intercultural Sensitivity, Intercultural Communication, Building Commitment and Managing Diversity.
  • To develop a general understanding of what culture is and how to manage the human habit of stereotyping.
  • To learn and practise the skills of observing, describing and interpreting the behavior of people who are culturally different from ourselves.
  • To practise communication techniques that allow us to overcome the barriers involved in intercultural communication, including:
  • suspension of judgment
  • managing stereotypes
  • reflecting on and interpreting behavior
  • development of empathy and perspective taking
  • To understand the importance and dynamics of the 4 Core Competences and how they may be developed and applied to intercultural interaction.

Contenuti dell’insegnamento

Module I: Intercultural Sensitivity: Perceptions, Values, Norms, Understanding Cultural Differences, Understanding Intercultural Sensitivity

Module 2: Managing Uncertainty, The Impact of Rules on Uncertainty, Emotional Challenge in Intercultural Encounters and Ethnocentricity

Module 3: Intercultural Communication, Conversational Concerns, Managing Face across cultures

Module 4: Building Commitment, Group Dynamics and Diversity, Dealing with Conflict

Metodologia Didattica

This course is highly interactive, using presentations, role-plays and simulations designed to allow you to practically apply the theory presented. Using the IRC self-assessment tool encourages you to track and reflect on your learning experience.

 

Modalità con cui viene accertata l’effettiva acquisizione dei risultati di apprendimento.

  • Attendance and class participation (25%)
  • Preparation and delivery of a group presentation (25%)
  • Personal reflection paper due at the end of the course (50%)
  • Personal reflection paper based on IRC learnings and outcomes. Referring to your personal IRC report, you will be asked to reflect on and analyse your own learnings and outcomes achieved as well as identify on-going goals for future development and your semester abroad
