Learning Objectives

The students will be able at the end of the course to analyze and diagnose professional behaviors, in order to understand properly the  human dynamics which evolve within a multicultural  organization and specifically a during  project  process,  including different cultural origins

They will increase the variety of possible behaviors,   enhancing the flexibility of their reactions to critical situations,  where an intervention is required, taking into account the cultural differences and adjusting consequently  their modalities of interactions

They will be provided with the  cultural basics to deals with the main cultural areas

They will develop the skill of thinking and acting beyond stereotypes and of  fostering the contribution of other culture members,  respecting the different visions they belong to

Learning targets

The student will receive and  develop a  solid background  on the main classic theories and approaches to the multicultural problem in managing people and projects

Furthermore , they will be aware of the most advanced evolutions  of though and schools which are under construction,  to tackle the globalization challenge.

This cultural and cognitive base will allow the students to perform autonomously specific studies  towards  targeted countries and cultures, when they will be asked to perform as far as HR and Project management are concerned

They will be able to refine the models they will learn through the personal experience, thanks to the  methods adopted in the lectures

Course Content

The  topics which compose the  overall programme are:

  • Classic schools tackling the multicultural problem
  • New schools induced by the globalization and the technological leap
  • The forth way, beyond knowledge and experience ( the Black Box Approach)
  • How  the human resource management faces the cultural differences
  • The main cultural areas and their common aspects : Individual and country culture, organizational cultures
  • Impact  of cultural differences on the project management
  • Fundamentals on complex organizational structures and project processes  and their adaptability to country cultures
  • How cultures influence HR management and project management :
  • Hiring , developing and retaining people
  • The peculiarity of the projects in HR management
  • The role of expatriates in the MNEs
  • Motivation and commitment
  • Organizing programs and people in project
  • Conflict Management
  • Measuring performances
  • Power and Leadership Styles
  • Impact on Merger and acquisition
  • Change management between different cultures
  • Future trends in the multicultural disciplines evolution

 

Course Delivery

The pedagogic method includes the following factors:

  •  Theories and  models to   create a common and scientific language
  • Examples from the real experience of the teachers
  • Vision of Audiovisuals to test the students level of theories mastery
  • Students cases to challenge the teachers
  • Case studies of success and failures
  • Testimonials of managers belonging to different cultures
  • Workshop in subgroups and discussion in plenary
  • Feedback to the class most significant multicultural behaviors
  • IF FEASIBLE (to be confirmed) visit to a complex organisation to understand real application of HR strategies

Course Etiquette

The attendance to lessons is a fundamental requisite for the students preparation.Please verify that there will not be overlaps with other chosen courses 

Respect and punctuality are requested

The participation and collaboration is fundamental in term of asking questions and proposing personal  remarks

Team work is a requisite  for the correct evolution of the learning process

Course Evaluation

 

The exam will be in written form, at the end of the course.

The written exam  is composed by two sections, one  relevant to Luciano Traquandi's  lectures and the second one to Andrea Martone's lectures .

The overall grade is the sum of the  grades of the two sections

In details the grading composition is according to the following rules:

The maximum achievable points for professor Traquandi exam are 20

Beside the written part results the attendance to a seminar will add one point

The extra point will not be valid in case of retake

The maximum achievable points for professor Martone exam are 10

Beside the written part the attendance to Andrea Martone's lesson will yield 2 points and the team works graded at the end of the lesson a total of 2 points

The workshop and attendance contribution will be valid only for the first written exam, not in case of retake

Exam modalities for Professor Traquandi's section

 

The exam of Traquandi's section will be in form of essay, with NO MORE THAN 3 PAGES, to be uploaded within the exam deadlines on E Corsi "assignments" area

 (2 dates will be possible in summer session, available soon)

The student will compose the essay  according to these rules.

 

1) Chose a personal case that you lived or you  personally observed in your environment (Work, Family, University, Social communities, Sport teams). It can also be a well known event on newspapers or TV, i.e. geopolitical events.

2) Analyze this case with two models explained during the course (list below)

One model is at your choice (within the list), the second model will be assigned by "Announcements"  15 days before the exam deadline. For the exam of june the model is "DRIVERS"

It is not requested  to describe the models, the grade is based on its application not on its explanation. For  example, if you choose the Driver model, you can specify the clues which lead you to find a specific driver in the case. 

3) upload the paper  on the "assignment" folder I will create  15 days before the date on E-corsi.

The format can be in MS  Word or PDF, DO NOT USE SLIDE FORMAT

Please remember ONLY 3 PAGES will be allowed;

your name has to be clearly written on your paper, not only on the file name

The grade of this section will be averaged  with Professor Martone's  section (2/3 Traquandi 1/3 Martone)

4) the exam can be retaken  in case of failure

5) for the administrative aspects please refer to the international office or  to "segreteria studenti"
