Aim of the course
The course is intended to offer an introduction to the field of international relations. During the course a system approach will be adopted: international relations link with international law, with international economics, with domestic politics will be continuously highlighted.
Syllabus
1 The knowledge of the international relations history: the meaning
2 Relationships between international relations history and international relations
3 Relationships between international relations history and economy, politics, international law and military aspects
4 The main players on the international system
5 Some defining moments of the international relations history:
-the First World War: political, diplomatic, economical aspects; the end of four empires; the peace agreements and their consequences; the rise of nationalism;
-the economic interdependende among the different states: the 1929 crisis;
-the first signs and the causes of the Second World War;
-the end of the British Empire; the decolonisation: economic aspects, the end of eurocentrism; the rise of new international players:
-the political and economic recoils of the cold war;
-the new relationships between Italy and U.S.A;
6 Outlines on recent movements: 1989; 2001: the awakening of Islam; turmoil in the Southern part of the Mediterranean Area
Examinations
Student will be evaluated on the basis of class attendance and a final written exam
