Guida dello studente: International Program A.Y. 2006/07

STUDYNG AT LIUC

The Faculties
LIUC has three Faculties - Economics, Law and Engineering - which all
offer undergraduate programmes according to the new Italian Law.  All three faculties offer postgraduate  qualifications under the reform starting from 2004/2005.
International students on exchange or visiting programmes may attend any of the courses offered in English or Italian. A number of one year Master programmes are also offered in all Faculties but  are not open to non-registered students.

The academic system
The university academic year is based on two semesters - winter and spring semester - for a total of 28 teaching weeks plus three exam sessions in January, June and September.
A credit system has been introduced  based on the European Credit Transfer System.
One academic year is 60 credits and each credit is worth 25 hours of study.  This means total workload including class contact hours, self study, assignments and exam preparation. Class contact hours correspond to a maximum 40% of the total workload.

Study methods
Most teaching in Italian takes place in the lecture hall but English-taught courses make more use of tutorials and group work.
In both cases students are expected to devote a significant amount of time to individual study outside the classroom.

Examinations
Most exams in Italian are oral although many courses also have a written test. They are held  in the exam sessions following each semester. Courses taught in English mostly have a mid-term test and a written exam immediately after the course finishes.
The Italian system allows students to turn down marks they are not
satisfied with, even if they have passed the exam, and to try again in the next session for a higher mark.  All exam results count to the final degree score.

Marking system
The Italian marking system has a pass mark of 18  and the highest result is 30 cum laude.  Please see the grading scale on next pages for  ECTS conversions.

Attendance
Some courses may have compulsory attendance and lecturers will ask
students to sign a register. Students are nevertheless expected to attend all courses and it is highly recommended for all international students.
