Learning Objectives

At the end of the course students will be able:

  1. to critically analyse the European integration policy, from a legal viewpoint;
  2. to solve the problems arising from the enforcement of EU law within the national legal systems;

Learning targets

The course aims at providing students with a thorough understanding of the institutional aspects of the EU legal order, as well as of the various problems connected with the application of EU rules in the Member States.

Course Content

The course deals mainly with the institutional aspects of the EU law, i.e. the institutions and the powers of the European Union; the different sources of EU law and their implementation in the national legal systems; the direct effect and the supremacy of the EU law; the judicial protection of the rights stemming from EU rules.

In order to better illustrate the abovementioned institutional issues, the course touches also upon some substantive topics, such as the internal market principles, competition and consumer law.

Course Delivery

The course will run under a workshop format requiring active students’ involvement. Lectures are held throughout the entire semester. Students are responsible for learning the material before coming to class and for providing a meaningful contribution to the discussion led by the instructor.

Students are responsible for consulting on a regular basis the website of the course on “my.liuc.it” where updates, additional material and slides about the course are posted.

Course Etiquette

In your own interest and in the interest of your colleagues, please strictly observe the following courtesy rules:

1. Arrive in class on time; do not leave early without prior explicit instructor’s approval.

2. Keep your mobiles and laptops off; do not chat with classmates.

3. Do not wander in and out of the classroom.
